At Calvary's Cross

At Calvary’s cross;         It seemed all was lost.

It looked like the enemies had won.

                                             The devil was dancing.

                                             His minions were celebrating.

                                             The powers were satisfied.

                                             Yet their peace was shaky.

At Calvary’s cross:         The sun could bear it no more.

Wind wished to wipe off the whole lot.

Rocks desired to crush the crucifiers.

                                             Earth was hungry to swallow

Fire, hail, and rain held their breath.

As birds and all creatures in silence wept.

At Calvary’s cross:         Lord, your mother’s heart was pierced.

                                             Her longings were unrequited.

                                             The family was ashamed.

                                             Denied you were theirs.

                                             Fear gripped your friends.

                                             Into hiding they fled.

At Calvary’s cross:         The adoring angels covered faces.

They could not behold your agony.

                                             To comfort you, they longed.

                                             Strictly restrained were  they.

                                             Anger welled up in them.

                                             Bitter tears they shed.

At Calvary’s cross:         Holy Spirit, soothing whisper,

                                             The predictable unpredictable one.

                                             Unseen wind, yet moving force.

                                             Shalom Dove, Fiery Flame,

Was that you, or was it just lighting?

                                        We missed your power.

At Calvary’s cross:         Holy Father, sweet ABBA!

                                             That Sinai sound was silent.

No sweet melodious voice soothed Jesus.

                                             No comforting embrace.

Devine Judge, just ominous, dark clouds,

Veiled was even that stern face.

At Calvary’s cross:         Sweet Jesus, the face kids loved to kiss and caress,

                                             We beat, bruised, and bloodied,

                                             Marred beyond recognition.

We turned away from looking at You, Lord.

We mistook Your patience as impotence,

And judged You “cursed of God”.

In the Cross’ Shadow:  The Grand Resurrection!

Victory’s jubilation explodes thru all creation.

The price was paid. But what a price!

Is it true? Is it really true?

Forever dear Savior, the receipt you will wear?

The dark cross is a Glorious Beacon of Light and Truth!

Savior Divine, your covenant complete! Promises kept!!

We humbly kneel at the Cross. But, what jubilation, open empty tomb!!

You are alive Forever and forever. Amen!
